In 1985, a revolutionary new system was introduced to enable single-visit dental restorations. Millions of patients later, CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) has produced impressive results in providing better and quicker crowns, veneers, inlays and onlays, or to replace old amalgam fillings.
Normally, for example, if the top of a tooth has been reduced by tension that causes teeth to be ground while you sleep, you would want a tooth-like crown to be placed on top to protect it. This might also be needed on top of a dental implant if a tooth has been knocked out or needed to be extracted. This cap might also help hold a tooth together that has been cracked.
But traditionally, this required a first visit for an exam and x-ray, then an impression of the area needing the crown would be taken and sent to a dental lab to craft it, a process that typically took 2-3 weeks. Meantime, the dentist would make a temporary one of acrylic so that you could still chew, albeit carefully. Then you would have to return to the office to have the crown placed.
Of course, that meant that not only would there be a delay in getting the permanent solution, but you would have to take the time and endure the hassle of two visits and sitting in the chair. That might also require taking time off from work, making arrangements for childcare, or picking up kids from school or afterschool activities.
But at CitiDental, our CEREC system allows us to use a special 3D camera to take an image of the area that is in trouble and transfer it to an advanced milling machine. This CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) process then allows us to create a personalized crown or whatever you need. It does so using biocompatible, strong dental ceramic that is perfectly matched to the shade of your natural teeth. It also requires less of the tooth to be removed to add the bonding substance to attach the restoration permanently.
